The award-winning documentary Unrivaled: Sewanee 1899 now has a follow-up book. Join us to chat with the authors and illustrator and learn about this latest release.
In 1899 a small college football team achieved the impossible: they won five games in six days while traveling 2,500 miles by train. During their 12-0 season, the Sewanee Tigers beat the best teams in the South. The story of the 1899 Iron Men has all the hallmarks of fiction; yet, as former Sewanee Vice Chancellor John McCardell has noted, “It’s more than lore—it’s true.” It ranks as one of the greatest achievements in the history of sports.
A few years ago, Mountain Brook resident Norman Jetmundsen produced a documentary about this amazing story which premiered on Alabama Public Television. Since that time, he has heard from viewers of the documentary as well as friends and family members of those football players. They shared stories, photographs, and other details about the team. Mr. Jetmundsen's new book follows up on the team's story, fills in some gaps, and provides new information. This evening will be a fun night for football fans, Sewanee alumni, and anyone who loves a big-hearted story. Mr. Jetmundsen, co-author Karen Fecteau, and artist Ernie Eldridge will join us for the launch of this new book about Sewanee's unrivaled team.
Copies will be available to purchase.
