Project Summary

The interior of the O’Neal Library building has changed little in the last 25 years, but the way our community uses the Library has changed significantly. This interior renovation will create more play space for children, a larger storytelling room, a space for teens, a larger, more visible Innovation Center, four additional study rooms, a small conference room, LED lighting throughout the building, remodeled restrooms, and updated furniture and finishes.

Temporary Location FAQs

Location and Access

1. Is this a permanent move?

No, this is a temporary move for the duration of the interior renovation.

2. Is there parking nearby?

Yes, there is parking available in the area, though parking directly outside city Hall is limited. The Library and City Hall ask that patrons park on Dan Watkins or Keely Court to minimize traffic disruption.

3. Is the new location ADA-accessible/easy to get into?

Yes, the temporary library will be located on the first floor.

4. Why is the Library moving to City Hall?

After an extensive of review of properties in Mountain Brook and adjacent communities, the Library is excited to remain in Crestline.  While the Library looked at the old Fire Station #2 and many other properties, the Council Chambers at City Hall will still be on the beaten path for many of the Library's patrons.  The Library is grateful to all the folks at City Hall who are welcoming the Library into the building.

Timeline and Future

1. How long will the Library be at this location?

Approximately twelve months.

2. When will the main building reopen?

Summer 2027.

3. How will updates about the renovation/move be shared?

Patrons can check our social media accounts and the Library website.

Programs and Community

1. What programming will be available at the temporary location?

The Children's Summer Reading Program and Teen Summer Reading Program will be available at the new space.  Children’s storytimes will be held at City Hall location and other off-site locations. However, programming beyond storytime will not be offered at this time. The Adult Department’s Mah Jong programming will be held at an off-site location. Check our calendar for specific programming information.

Collection and Returns

1. Can I still use my library card?

Yes, patrons may continue to use their library card at the City Hall location or any other Jefferson County Library Cooperative library.

2. How do I return checked-out items?

Patrons may return items at the City Hall location, to the new book drop at the Fire Station #2 on Overton Rd., or at any Jefferson County Library Cooperative library.

Please do not return items to the 50 Oak Street location during the renovation.
