Great conversation about great short fiction!

The Great Short Stories reading and discussion group is currently using two texts:

"One World: A Global Anthology of Short Stories," edited by Chris Brazier. Click here to reserve a copy. This title is also instantly available as an ebook on Hoopla (for residents of the cities of Birmingham, Gardendale, Homewood, Hoover, Irondale, Leeds, Mountain Brook, Pinson, Pleasant Grove, Trussville, Vestavia Hills, and Warrior only).

GSS meets the second Monday of each month at 6:30pm in the Library's Conference Room AND online on Zoom.  If you'd prefer to attend online, register your email to receive a Zoom meeting link the morning of the event.

February 14 - Honor of a Woman by Dipita Kwa (Cameroon) page 83 in the text, led by Carol

March 14 - Growing My Hair Again by Chika Unigwe (Nigeria) page 75 in the text, led by Joanna

April 11 - Tomorrow by William Faulkner, page 347 in "Adaptations," led by Bill (If you'd like to watch it, the film adaptation is available for Mountain Brook library cardholders on Kanopy.)

May 9 - The Killers by Ernest Hemingway, page 421 in "Adaptations," led by Sandra (If you'd like to watch it, the film adaptation is available on dvd in the library system or can be rented from Amazon Prime Video.)

June 13 - The Sentinel by Arthur C. Clarke, page 104 in "Adaptations," led by Ron (If you'd like to watch it, the film adaptation, 2001: A Space Odyssey, is available on dvd and blu-ray in the library system or can be rented from Amazon Prime Video.)

July 11 - Ghost World Chapter 5 "Hubba Hubba" by Daniel Clowes, page 265 in "Adaptations," led by Holley (If you'd like to watch it, the film adaptation is available on dvd in the library system or can be rented from Amazon Prime Video.)

August 8 - The Kettle on the Boat by Vanessa Gebbie, page 89 in "One World," led by Samuel

September 12 - The Lady with the Pet Dog by Anton Chekhov, page 540 in "Adaptations," led by Bob (If you'd like to watch it, the film adaptation Dark Eyes can be rented from Amazon Prime Video.)

October 10 - A guest presenter, UAB film studies professor Gareth Jones, will be leading our discussion of It Had to Be Murder by Cornell Woolrich, page 67 in "Adaptations." (If you'd like to watch it, the film adaptation, Rear Window, is available on DVD and Blu-ray in the library system or can be rented from Amazon Prime Video.)

November 14 - Your Arkansas Traveler by Budd Schulberg, page 38 in "Adaptations," led by Sandra (If you'd like to watch it, the film A Face in the Crowd is available on DVD in the library system and can be rented from Amazon Prime Video. It may likely be available on other premium streaming services.) 

December 12 - The Way of the Machete by Martin A. Ramos, page 27 in "One World," led by Samuel
